An Unexpected Hand

Life has pitfalls and travails aplenty –
Sometimes they curse you and pull to the mire
As sadness overtakes with desire to lay down
And give up, to do all a favor…and die….

Then a friend unexpectedly reaches out a hand
As breaths begin to come evenly again,
No longer labored and shallow, out of breath,
To know you matter to someone, life’s not at an end.

Setting atop this Autumn ridge with my dog,
Breathing deeply the soft gentle breeze
Up from the valley where fall’s colors begin to show
So I know that life will continue another day

Blue sky punctuated by trees standing proud,
Green leaves still – yet twinged with yellows
Woodland aromas so full of verdant life,
Cycle of seasons at summer’s end
    winter’s ahead, with strife leading
            towards Springtime again….
